AEMS Instructors are ALS (Advanced Life Support) Paramedics who are
internationally registered and current with Health Professionals Council
of South Africa (HPCSA) and Heart Organization UK, Authorized and Accredited AREMT Instructors and Assessors for Emergency Medical Technicians.
The
AEMS EMT Course will run for 6 to 8 weeks didactic training and followed by 250 hours of mentored / supervised practical ambulance exposure. The
EMT course is a pre-requisite for any individual seeking employment as a
certified Emergency Medical Technician in the EMS industry. The material
covered in this course is divided into 7 modules.
Preparatory, Airway Management,
Patient Assessment, Medical Emergencies, Trauma Emergencies, Infants and
Children and Operations. A brief description of each module follows :
Module 1 - Preparatory
Topics covered in this module are: EMS systems, the role of the
EMT, the safety and well-being of the EMT, legal and ethical issues,
basic anatomy and physiology, techniques of lifting and moving patients.
Module 2 - Airway Management
Topics covered in this module are: airway anatomy, airway
management techniques, oxygen and oxygen equipment.
Module 3 - Patient Assessment
Topics covered in this module are: assessment of the medical and
trauma patients, vital sign assessment, taking a patient history,
documentation, and communication.
Module 4 - Medical Emergencies
Topics covered in this module are: pharmacology, respiratory,
cardiac, diabetic, allergy, poisoning and overdose, environmental, behavioral
and obstetrical / gynecological emergencies
Module 5 - Trauma Emergencies
Topics covered in this module are: bleeding and shock, soft
tissue and musculoskeletal injuries, injuries to the head, neck, spine, chest
and abdomen.
Module 6 - Infants & Children
Topics covered in this module are: physical and physiological
differences between adult and pediatric patients, pediatric medical and trauma
emergencies.
Module 7 - Operations
Topics
covered in this module are: ambulance operations, rescue and extrication,
multiple patient situations, hazardous materials situations.
At the end of the AEMS Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Training Period, our graduates are able to :
- Perform competently within the role and responsibilities of an EMT.
- Apply the basic concepts of growth and development, pathophysiology principles of history-taking and physical examination to the assessment and management of emergency patients.
- Properly and safely administer medications and communicate effectively with patients, families,and other healthcareprofessionals.
- Employ protocols of paramedicine to patients within the scope of practice of the various levels of EMT under medical direction.
- Employ appropriate skills in areas of airway management, intravenous therapies, medication administration and other EMS treatment models effectively and safely.
- Integrate pathophysiological principles, assessment findings, and knowledge of anatomy and physiology to formulate a pre-hospital diagnosis and implement the appropriate scope of intervention for trauma, medical, neonatal, pediatric, geriatric, as well as chronically ill and challenged patients without hesitation.
- Safely and effectively manage all situations involving a pre-hospital emergency.
- Practice critical thinking skills and analysis.
